First post: *Can you stand the heat?*
From my experiences in pageants, modeling, and now in the world of TV news, I have learned that one important common denominator (among many others) is developing a THICK SKIN….A shield of armor around you’re emotions, you’re nerves and quite frankly becoming a placid shell of yourself in some cases. One would think choosing to enter any other the above careers would automatically imply you are built Ford tough, but for this shy, starry eyed girl from Baltimore COUNTY, it was definitely a trait that had to be developed.
I mean, we ALWAYS see the girl who wins right? They never show the brigade of jaded queens in the back room sobbing and uttering expletives at the TV screen as they watch their peers advance to the next round…The surely don’t put the girl who DIDN’T land the GAP commercial on the billboard. We only see the polished News Anchors sitting at glossy sets and never and chaotic newsroom where frightened DA’s and interns hold their breaths in anticipation of where or who the next target will be (could make a pretty cool reality show…lol).
This reality check happens only when you peel back the shiny plastic and dive in. No one can anticipate what a “NO” feels like until you are actually told “NO”. You deal with it and you learn how to cope (hopefully).
There are people who are so jaded by everything in their immediate lives, just can’t help but give back the negative energy they have received. But to me the most disturbing individual is the person that will tear you down just because they can. With military precision, they will find you’re weaknesses and insecurities and play them like Nintendo. In my opinion, this is a mechanism for instilling fear and authority… but trust and believe they WILL get off on seeing you fail. I promise you, I am not a cynic, but the reality is not everyone you meet has a personal investment in you’re well being or success. And being in a competitive atmosphere makes random acts of kindness all the more elusive.
Inspite of the all this there have been a handful of guardian angels I’ve discovered along my journey…those special people that always seem to know when you need a hug or a few words of encouragement. I am thankful for all the experience I have encountered both good and not so good…I have been tested mentally, physically, and spiritually this past year. And I can say that although I have been bent every which way, I have not been broken. My resolve continues to get stronger and my hunger to attain my goals has only been fueled by each challenge.
I’ve learned that confidence is the best shield of defense. Once you know who you are and are confident in you’re abilities, no one can tell you who you are and what you are capable of…..IF THEY DIDN’T MAKE YOU, THEY CAN’T BREAK YOU!
*Go forth and prosper*
